Aprilโ€™s Book Club

Our next book for April's Book Club is 'The Anxious Generation' by Jonathan Haidt. We hope you can join us to discuss this insightful and thought provoking work.

Synopsis

In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt breaks down the mental health crisis hitting today's teens and explains how we got here. He dives into how childhood has changed over the decadesโ€”from the carefree, play-filled days of the 1980s to the screen-dominated, "phone-based" childhood that took over in the 2010s. Haidt reveals how this massive shift has rewired kids' brains and messed with their social development, touching on issues like sleep loss, attention problems, addiction, loneliness, social comparison, and the endless pressure to be perfect.

He also takes a closer look at why social media is hitting girls the hardest and why so many boys are retreating into video games and virtual worlds, leaving behind real-life connections with devastating consequences. But Haidt doesn't just lay out the problemโ€”he offers solutions. He shares four practical rules to help us escape the traps we've set for ourselves and suggests ways parents, teachers, schools, tech companies, and even governments can step up to restore a healthier, happier version of childhood.

With years of experience tackling tough topics like political divides, culture wars, and now Gen Z's mental health crisis, Haidt delivers the hard truths we need to hear. If we want to protect our kidsโ€”and ourselvesโ€”from the damage of a screen-obsessed world, it's time to pay attention.
