To wrap up 2024, Book Club is celebrating Asian voices with a non-fiction pick by South Korean author Baek Sehee: I Want to Die but I Want to Eat Tteokbokki - her semi-autobiographical memoir (as recommended by BTS!) This internationally acclaimed therapy memoir has been translated by International Booker Prize finalist Anton Hur.
"PSYCHIATRIST: So, how can I help you?
ME: I don't know, I'm—what's the word—depressed? Do I have to go into detail?
At the time, Baek Sehee is a young, successful social media director at a publishing house, who feels persistently down, anxious, and hypercritical—both of herself and others. She hides her emotions behind a mask of calm, managing the high demands of her career while feeling isolated and burnt out. But can this really be normal? And if she's so hopeless, why does she still crave her favorite street food, spicy rice cakes (tteokbokki)? Could this be all there is to life?
In I Want to Die but I Want to Eat Tteokbokki, Baek records her twelve weeks of conversations with her psychiatrist, reflecting on each session in short essays. Through this dialogue, she begins to unravel the feedback loops, impulsive reactions, and toxic habits that keep her trapped in a cycle of self-doubt. Part memoir, part self-help, this book is a companion for those who've ever felt unjustified in their daily struggles or alone in their despair. A thoughtful read to keep close during tough times."
