Our next book forMay's Book Club is 'Looking For Smoke' by K.A. Cobell. We hope you can join us to discuss this gripping and emotionally rich mystery that offers much more than thrills.
During the vibrant but heavy-hearted Indian Days celebration on the Blackfeet reservation, Loren is trying to hold herself together. Her sister has been missing for three agonizing months, and grief hangs heavy over her family's giveaway in honor of her late grandfather. After a gathering with her closest friends, two newcomers, and her grandmother, Loren thinks the night will simply be another painful but necessary step forward.
But when her best friend Samantha turns up dead, everything shatters. Loren and the othersโBrody, Eli, and new girl Maraโare the last to have seen Samantha alive, and they each carry secrets and complicated ties to her. As suspicion falls heavily on them, the four teens must band together to uncover the truth, even as fear and grief threaten to pull them apart. In their search, they also face the chilling question: could Samantha's murder be connected to Loren's missing sister?
Looking for Smoke is a gripping, emotionally rich mystery that offers much more than thrillsโit's a powerful exploration of community, family, loss, and resilience. K.A. Cobell, a member of the Blackfeet Nation, brings an authentic, deeply respectful lens to the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) crisis, offering a portrayal that is both heartrending and full of hope. Through her layered characters, she captures the complexity of Native life and identity, from those raised on the reservation to those straddling two worlds.
Perfect for readers who appreciate stories that blend suspense with deep emotional truths, Looking for Smoke is sure to spark meaningful conversations about justice, belonging, and the bonds that hold us together even in the face of tragedy.
